Core Skills & Capabilities
You can’t be a lifelong learner with an empty toolbox. At THYNK Academy we believe students need a very well-equipped and balanced toolbox in order to navigate uncertainty and create preferred futures.
Therefore we aim to see students proficient in the skills of literacy and numeracy while building a body of general knowledge and developing a set of general capabilities, giving them a complete and solid foundation for all future learning.
Google may have all the answers, but if you don’t ask the right questions you won’t get the right answer. You certainly can’t ask Google to put the best bits of your research together. This is where ‘21st Century Skills’ (Capabilities) like critical and creative thinking matter, but if you don’t have the core skills and disciplines like reading and writing you won’t have all the tools to learn, solve, make and create.
The core skills below are a daily focus at THYNK Academy. They are explicitly taught during optimum learning times (morning sessions) without interruption or delay. Although it is our focus and priority, we make each lesson fun, engaging and memorable using tangible, real world activities that are evidenced-based best practice.
- reading and comprehension
- writing - informative, persuasive and imaginative
- Speaking and listening
- Mathematics
