THYNK ACADEMY

Education Philosophy

We have an educational philosophy that centres on the child. This means every decision, every discussion, every implementation of teaching and learning starts with the question, ‘What is best for the students?’ We are not constrained by the past to one specific education philosophy that was best practise 100 years ago, nor are we tied down by past or current policies made by decision makers not specifically trained in education. Further, we are not constrained as some education providers who may be required to invest considerable energies into maintaining public perception (the need to look good). As a truly independent school we have the freedom and agility to implement changes quickly and efficiently (for the good of the students).

We support our students, parents and teachers so that we engender a strong sense of community and family. The saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ is so vitally important and this is at the forefront of our thinking as we build a school community that can work together for the benefit of the students.

Teaching Pedagogy

Pedagogy is defined as the methods and practices used by teachers to help students learn. It is sometimes known ‘the art and science’ of teaching children. It encompasses:
  • Teaching styles
  • Teaching theory
  • Ways of assessing

When people talk about pedagogy, they are referring to the ways teachers deliver the content of the curriculum to a group of children. When a teacher plans a lesson, they will consider different ways to deliver the content according to the subject taught and age and abilities of the students.

At THYNK Academy, our pedagogy has flexibility ‘built-in’ which means we are not constrained to follow a ‘one-approach-fits-all’ ideology.  We can select the method or strategy that best fits the subject taught, the age of students, their learning styles and background.  At THYNK Academy, on any given day you can expect to see a mix of “visible learning” which includes lecturing, modelling and demonstrations from the teacher (a more traditional approach to teaching) to slower-paced, less teacher-talk lessons (that may involve concrete materials or working outdoors or engaging with nature). These are viewed as a more progressive teaching style and involves elements of project-based and inquiry-based learning.

Whether it be a traditional or progressive approach, our flexible and creative learning spaces will help achieve the learning goal accordingly. This may involve individual, pair, and whole class instruction by the teacher through explicit instruction, modelling and questioning; or students learning from each other in small groups and pairs; or even the students themselves deciding on the topic for a lesson (within parameters given).

Our inspiring approaches may utilise forms of teaching and learning that contain non-standard constructions, such as hip-hop or graffiti. Students may be asked to showcase their learning in a range of forms such as taking on the role of an expert; utilising technology for creating graphic presentations, films, animations, websites, podcasts and more, or communicate their learning through creative artforms (such as music, drama, speech, dance and visual art).
